CARIBBEAN IDENTITIES

WITH SEBASTIEN MEHAL, ADLER GUERRIER & JOSÉ NICOLAS, JESUS "BUBU" NEGRON & WYLDA BAYRON, JEAN-MARC HUNT, WALKING RODRIGUEZ

FROM MAY. 16th TO JUL. 07th, 2019

PRESENTATION

The 193 Gallery presents the first part of a series of exhibitions dedicated to Caribbean contemporary art, through 7 artists representing 5 Caribbean islands.

Far from postcards and photographs of the region, the 193 Gallery wants to present a contemporary vision of the Caribbean, firmly rooted in the present.

Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Guadeloupe are related through 7 major artists, present in the largest biennials (Venice, Cuba ...) and the main contemporary art fairs (FIAC, Art Basel, Slick Art Fair. ..)

Through these lands of migration and diversity with roughly different histories, the exhibition notably questions the concept of insularity and postcolonial Caribbean identity. Can we speak of Caribbean identity, as this vast space is fundamentally plural? Through their work, these artists tell us about their islands, their recent developments, and their links with the rest of the world.
