In the artwork Make America Latina Great Again, Shinji Nagabe subverts the American political slogan by inserting the term "LATINA," thereby redirecting the discourse toward Latin America. The Brazilian flag, a national emblem, serves as the medium for this statement, transforming a symbol of national pride into a tool for social and political critique. The hand-embroidered inscription, adorned with shimmering sequins—a technique reminiscent of traditional craftsmanship—adds an aesthetic and ironic dimension to the piece, while echoing the social and economic contrasts inherent in Latin American countries.

Through this series of 20 flags, each referencing a different country in the region, Shinji Nagabe interrogates the concepts of identity and sovereignty, invoking colonial history and struggles for independence. The project invites viewers to reflect on how Latin America defines itself in relation to American history, encouraging a critical examination of the power dynamics and relationships between the United States and Latin America.
