The Outdoor Bathroom recreates a domestic environment centered on gestures of care, memory, and transmission. The installation is divided into two distinct sections, separated by a central partition: one dedicated to care rituals, the other to bathing.
The ceiling is draped with a batik fabric hand-dyed by the artist, evoking a star-filled sky. Soft light filters through the cloth, casting a dim, nocturnal atmosphere across the space. The walls, painted in deep blue, are covered with a mural of tropical vegetation—palm trees, coconut trees—drawn from the artist’s memories of outdoor showers in Ghana and Guadeloupe.
A layered soundscape fills the installation. Created in collaboration with artist Phantom Wizard, it blends field recordings collected during research trips with musical elements, including a wooden flute that weaves through the ambient sounds of night—running water, distant waves, insects.
In the care area, a raffia mat is placed on the ground alongside a stool, a chair, and a basket filled with hair products. Synthetic braiding hair—recently removed by the artist as she undid her own braids—lies on the mat. A boubou hangs from a clothesline. On the wall, a mural shows the artist in the act of unbraiding her hair, echoing moments of care and intimacy shared with women in her family.
A small radio placed on the mat plays a personal audio recording: the artist washing, singing, and tending to herself, accompanied by a neo-soul playlist. This intimate voice blends with the immersive ambient soundtrack, heightening the feeling of privacy and introspection throughout the space.
The shower area, on the other side of the partition, is hand-tiled by the artist. Yellow tiles cover the walls and floor, with spray-painted grout lines. A painted shower head is mounted on the wall, covered with a netted scrubber. A mural painted directly on the tiles depicts the artist’s nude body. On the ground, a basin of water and a plastic scoop evoke daily rituals shaped by water shortages and improvised bathing practices.
