Shinji Nagabe Brazil, 1975
39 3/8 x 27 1/2 x 4 in
Nagabe’s Shungas series is inspired by Japanese erotic prints, which he discovered early in life in a book that belonged to his father. In his reinterpretation, Nagabe uses fabrics that resemble the kimonos of the characters in Shunga prints, intertwining them in erotic scenes. Emerging arms, along with flowers and fruits in sexual forms, add depth to the composition. Through these works, Nagabe honors an art form that shaped his sexual awakening, while continuing to explore sensuality and intimacy in a rich, visual, and symbolic manner.
