The wax fabric: issues of appropriation, commerce, and identity!

A report featuring Kenyan photographer Thandiwe Muriu, whose work is showcased in the Wax exhibition at the Musée de l’Homme. She discusses the role of wax fabric in Kenya with journalist Charlie Dupiot.

Wax fabric is one of her greatest sources of inspiration. At 34, Thandiwe Muriu is the first female photographer in Kenya to make a living from her art. At the heart of her work are portraits of Kenyan women dressed in vibrant wax prints. When our reporter Charlie Dupiot met her during a visit to Paris, the photographer almost apologized for not wearing wax herself—she reserves these outfits for special occasions, like an exhibition opening. Instead, she welcomed us in a mustard yellow jacket and black trousers at 193 Gallery, just steps from Place de la République. This Parisian art gallery has represented her for four years, and several of her works are currently on display there.
