Feast your eyes! Thandiwe Muriu (born in 1990) continues her dazzling exploration of African identity with a new series of images in which she becomes a textile creator herself. The Kenyan artist—whose work is included in the collections of UNESCO and the Photo Elysée Museum in Lausanne—has embraced the ancestral tie-dye technique to produce her own fabrics. The result: hypnotic portraits that make the eye vibrate as patterns converse with nature. A short film, presented as part of this vibrant exhibition at the 193 Gallery, documents this experiment in which the photographer collaborates with the elements. An artistic approach where cultural heritage and environmental awareness are beautifully woven into the same fabric.
