The works in the Pause-Clope series take the form of small sculptural compositions arranged on shelves, deliberately hovering between the ashtray, the catchall tray, and the intimate altar. Cigarettes collected by Gaëlle Choisne during her travels sit alongside bottles sourced from magic shops, whose potion-like appearance and slogans oscillate between incantation and promise. Fire, liquids, and coins bring a ritual vocabulary to the surface, while smoke and fragrances evoke offerings made to ancestors and to the lwa, Haitian spirits. Bureaucratic time and space are thus transformed into an altar, turning the cigarette break into a moment of suspension within the working day. These objects also map a geography of tobacco, shaped by the history of plantations and exploitation, capitalist mechanisms of dependency, and the climates and territories in which tobacco is produced and consumed.

**********
