Jean-Marc Hunt Guadeloupe, b. 1975

Son of a Guadeloupean father and a Reunionese mother, Jean-Marc Hunt was born in 1975 in Strasbourg (France). He grew up in the suburbs, learning his trade in graffiti and rap music. Settled in Guadeloupe since 2004, he has developed a practice in the continuity of figurative neo-expressionism and post-modernism.

Jean-Marc Hunt often claims to be influenced by De Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat, while keeping a distinct line. The drips, the energetic tracings, the scratching and the erasure are put to the benefit of the construction of his work. The object has an important place in his combined practice of assembly, accumulation and detour. 

Regularly invited to group exhibitions and residencies, Jean-Marc Hunt likes to venture into installation and monumental sculpture projects. Since 2005, he has also distinguished himself in scenography and exhibition curating. In January 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the French Republic. In 2019, he participated in the 58th Venice Biennale with the group exhibition Structures personnelles Identités at Palazzo Mora curated by Marcy Gaymu. 

The artist currently benefits from a major retrospective at the Fondation Clément in Martinique. This major exhibition presents a unique collection of some sixty original works throughout the building dedicated to contemporary art, featuring the recurring themes of his work: "Jardin créole", "Récits cosmogoniques" and "Musée métropolitain".
