Adler Guerrier, a Haitian artist based in Miami, works at the intersection of photography, drawing, collage, and installation. Through strategies of assemblage, the arrangement of recurring forms, and the recomposition of images, Guerrier develops a visual cartography in which physical and imagined geographies intersect, shaped by diasporic experience. Improvising between form and function, he nimbly subverts space and time in constructions of race, ethnicity, class, and culture.
In dialogue with Situationist thought and with urban theory developed by French thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau, Guerrier approaches his environment through a mode of attentive wandering, akin to that of the contemporary flâneur. His images are grounded in the urban and subtropical landscapes of Miami—community gardens, vacant lots, fences, and semi-wild spaces—where traces of human activity intertwine with dense vegetation. These sites become spaces of observation and reflection on the social, political, and ecological dynamics that shape everyday life, as well as spaces of meditation and reverie, from which possibilities for transformation emerge.
Adler Guerrier (b. 1975, Port-au-Prince, Haiti) lives and works in Miami, Florida, where he received a BFA from the New World School of the Arts. His work was included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial and has since been presented at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, as well as at the Bass Museum of Art (Miami), the African American Museum of Art (Los Angeles), the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia), Tate Liverpool (UK), the Fondation Clément (Martinique), the Havana Biennial (Cuba), and in France at La Friche Belle de Mai (Marseille) and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris). His work is held in public collections including ICA Miami, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York).
