Thoracic Cavity was produced for the exhibition Cours et Poisons, CURA / CNAP, at Tropiques Atrium in Martinique, curated by Marion Vasseur Raluy.
The work is inspired by the shape of a thoracic cavity, in which the heart and an entangled network of blood vessels appear to have been split open by a sickle. Within this wounded structure, flowers begin to bloom.
In the artist’s practice, this piece functions as a ritual incinerator connected to the poppy. It evokes a form of rebirth through fire, emerging from the dark history of opium. Through this organic image—at once anatomical, vegetal, and sacrificial—Thoracic Cavity reflects on the symbiotic relationship between humans and psychoactive plants.
The work forms part of the artist’s broader research into the poppy, colonial histories, the medicinal and toxic uses of plants, and ritual forms capable of transforming histories of violence into spaces of regeneration.
