In Korea, the term sangsabyeong (상사병) describes a physical illness caused by longing for someone, where love is understood not only as an emotional state but as something that can manifest in the body, like a fever.
So Deadly, So Beautiful takes this concept as the starting point for a self-portrait by the artist. The pink spots scattered across the figure appear as visible symptoms of longing — traces of desire made physical. The body is not depicted as wounded,
but as affected and transformed by love.
The artist is interested in the contradiction embedded in sangsabyeong, where love can be one of life’s most beautiful experiences, while also becoming overwhelming, obsessive,
and destructive. The painting situates the self-portrait in this tension, between ecstasy and suffering, where beauty and danger become difficult to separate.
