Overview
Artist Shourouk Rhaiem is taking part in the exhibition Vive la mariée ! (Long Live the Bride!) currently on view at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, where she presents her series Nuptiae Neapolis (The Nabeul Wedding).
Born from photographs of weddings in her Tunisian family archives, dating from the late 1950s to the 1980s, the series explores memory, transmission and heritage through the rituals and gestures that carry culture from one generation to the next.
Vive la mariée ! explores marriage as a social ritual in constant evolution. Bringing together 27 contemporary artists, primarily women, from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and their diasporas, the exhibition examines the traditions, emotions, and cultural meanings surrounding wedding celebrations, while reflecting on how these rituals continue to shape and challenge contemporary societies.
