In Carla Gueye’s work, the body and its memory do not exist in isolation. The vegetal world, matter, and architecture become structures capable of containing and protecting. Bodily forms rise up bearing the traces of what has shaped them. The motif of protrusion, which recurs throughout her visual vocabulary, belongs to this same logic: it emerges from the surface like an imprint, a growth, or the visible manifestation of a buried history.
In Masque (Mask), the eyes and nose emerge within a pointed form. This morphology recalls the defensive spines of young kapok trees, which help protect them from predators; here, it suggests the idea of protection. During a residency in Casamance, Senegal, the artist encountered these sacred trees and was introduced to traditional basketry, a technique she used to construct the pointed lower section of the work. The knowledge of lime inherited from her family is thus placed in dialogue with a new skill acquired through contact with another territory and other forms of transmission.
Carla Gueye creates her sculptures using lime, drawing on expertise passed down from her father. Traditionally used to coat and protect the walls of houses in the Charente region, where she grew up, lime evokes the home and the body in equal measure. The sculptures are then covered with a dark, earth-toned patina, creating a skin across their surfaces that retains the traces of the artist’s hand. Matter itself thus becomes a vehicle for memory.
