Aurum, the Latin word from which the chemical symbol for gold (Au) derives, explores notions of value, circulation, and displacement. The work takes the form of a large panel composed of plants, flowers, and fruits originating in the Americas and Asia that, over time, have crossed borders, adapted to new environments, and become integrated into everyday landscapes and diets. Their capacity for adaptation becomes a metaphor for migration: like these species, migrants move across territories, establish new forms of belonging, and transform the places they inhabit, while often facing invisibility and precarity. Through this parallel, Shinji Nagabe reflects on the ways value is assigned to bodies, objects, and trajectories.
