What to see at Canada’s largest photo festival

The Contact Photography Festival opens Friday in Toronto. It’s the largest event of its kind in Canada, and if you plan to be in the city this May, prepare for a few surprises. There will be art where there wasn’t art before.

A towering portrait by Thandiwe Muriu will rise above Spadina Ave, for example. In the picture, a masked woman wears a patterned blouse in the same riotous colours as the background. She’s effectively camouflaged, but the image is too sensational to be ignored. And if you didn’t know a photography festival had overtaken the downtown, you might have some questions — starting with “why is it here?”
