The Contact Photography Festival opens Friday in Toronto. It’s the largest event of its kind in Canada, and if you plan to be in the city this May, prepare for a few surprises. There will be art where there wasn’t art before.
A towering portrait by Thandiwe Muriu will rise above Spadina Ave, for example. In the picture, a masked woman wears a patterned blouse in the same riotous colours as the background. She’s effectively camouflaged, but the image is too sensational to be ignored. And if you didn’t know a photography festival had overtaken the downtown, you might have some questions — starting with “why is it here?”
