In Carla Gueye’s work, the body and its memory do not exist in isolation. The vegetal world, matter, and architecture become structures capable of containing and protecting. Bodily forms rise up bearing the traces of what has shaped them. The motif of protrusion, which recurs throughout her visual vocabulary, belongs to this same logic: it emerges from the surface like an imprint, a growth, or the visible manifestation of a buried history.

In the lime bas-relief As I Am, a figure appears upside down, with their feet above and head below. This inversion conveys the disorientation that can arise from the ongoing search for confiscated memories—an experience that confronts the subject with the missing fragments of their own history and compels them to reconsider the position from which they view themselves.

This bas-relief is made with lime, drawing on expertise passed down from the artist’s father. Traditionally used to coat and protect the walls of houses in the Charente region, where she grew up, lime evokes the home and the body in equal measure. The work is then covered with a patina that forms a skin across its surface, retaining the traces of the artist’s hand. Matter itself thus becomes a vehicle for memory.

****************
